1904 19th May, Minute Book


The Committee learned with regret from the Captain Superintendent that Mr E.C. Becksworth, Admiralty Instructor had been fo some time on the Sick List and had been recommended by Mr Stewart to retire from work. Captain Scott further stated that Mr Betsworth had served on board the Mars for 28 years, and had always been a most faithful and efficient officer. It was decided to record in the minutes the Committees regret at the loss of Mr Betsworth’s services, and their appreciation of the zeal and devotion displayed by him during his long connection with the institution, also to make him a retiring allowance as from 30th June of half pay for a period of two years.

Thursday Before Bailie Scott.

…Two Lochee lads – Francis Ruddichan (16), a millworker, and Bernard Kane (13), a schoolboy – were remitted to the Sheriff, charged with having, on Tuesday afternoon, forced open the door of a shop in Burnside Street, and stolen a box of cigarettes, a quantity of sweets, and 2 ½ d.

    Francis Ruddichan was an ex-Mars boy and was sentenced to five weeks in prison.
